As parents, we know how challenging it can be to sell a home, and when life is extra busy, it’s even more challenging. We also know the importance of prepping our home and keeping it clean. After all, it’s probably our single most valuable asset, and we don’t want it sitting on the market for years. However, kids don’t always see it that way, and sometimes they have a difficult time moving. If you’re a busy parent, here are some tips for getting your home ready to sell.

Talk to Your Kids

If your kids are having a hard time with the thought of moving, it’s important to keep an
open dialogue with them. Try to answer all their questions, and include them in parts of the planning process. Chances are they didn’t have much of a say in deciding to move, and they may not understand why it’s a good thing. However, when you clarify the reasons for moving and include them in some of the decisions moving forward — whether it’s checking out schools, shopping for a house, or researching a new city — they will be more likely to accept it and support your efforts to prep the home you’re attempting to sell.

Look Into Professional Stagers

Before you roll up your sleeves and get to work, see if hiring a professional home stager is in your budget. If so, it could make your job a whole lot easier.
Home stagers won’t do everything for you, of course, but they will handle much of the decorating and help bring your interior to life. You can also rent furniture for them to arrange so that it highlights the strengths of each space. It costs an average of $959 to hire a home stager.

Get the Clutter Out

Decluttering will make it easier to do the rest of the prepping because it will open up the space in your home for cleaning. Start by going through each room and set aside items that you don’t want to take with you to the new home. Put each item in one of three categories: trash, donate, or sell. If there is anything you want to keep but need to get out of the home for the showings, you can always put it in storage. It’s important that you involve your kids during this stage; let them choose a few of their favorite toys or novelty items to keep and put the rest in storage. This is another area where the pros can come in handy. Look into hiring a cleaning and junk removal service to help you get things in top shape before the sale sign goes up.

Depersonalize Every Space

When you’re decluttering, be sure to remove any
personal items and decor taste; after all, your trophies and family photos won’t help sell your home. One of the most important aspects for buyers is that they can envision living in the home; this is tough to do when it’s filled with another family’s belongings. Further, your cleaning service can do their job more effectively when there is less stuff to dust and scrub.  This concept also applies to the color of the walls. Consider painting each room a neutral tone (e.g., gray, beige, cream, etc.).

Boost Your Curb Appeal

Curb appeal is important because it’s the first thing a buyer will see when they drive up. Here are a few things you can do to make a good first impression:

  • Shape up the landscaping (e.g., mow, trim bushes and trees, lay mulch, etc.).
  • Clear clutter from the lawn and porch (e.g., fallen limbs, leaves, kids toys, etc.).
  • Upgrade the house numbers.
  • Upgrade the mailbox -- ask Lincoln Handyman Services for a quote.
  • Paint the front door a vibrant color (e.g., red, blue, teal).

Selling a home when you’re a busy parent is not easy, but you can make it more manageable by following a few simple steps. Keep an open dialogue with your kids about the moving process, and involve them in some of the decision-making. Also, consider hiring professional home stagers, and declutter and depersonalize every space. Finally, enhance your curb appeal to make a good first impression on buyers.
